Graduate Workshops

*Please note: Graduate workshops given by the Graduate Writing Specialist (GWS) will be unavailable during the Spring 2018 semester because the GWS will be out on maternity leave. These workshops will be available again in June.

Units, schools, departments, and student groups may request any of the following workshops, which will be given by the Graduate Writing Specialist.

Academic Job Search Materials (60 minutes)

This workshop provides advanced graduate students with guidance on how to write an academic cover letter, teaching statement, and research statement. It also covers how to choose an appropriate writing sample and where to find online and on-campus resources when writing job applications. This workshop is most appropriate for students who are on the academic job market and who are interested in post docs and/or tenure track positions.

Grant Writing (60-75 minutes)

This workshop introduces students to steps in the grant writing process, guidelines for effective grant writing, and grant writing resources. It can focus on research proposals (common in academia), on problem grants (common in the non-profit world), or on both. Please note that this workshop does NOT cover how to find funding sources. Contact Graduate Studies for a separate workshop on this topic.

Publishing Journal Articles (60-75 minutes)

This workshop focuses on how to target appropriate journals and how to tailor an article accordingly. It also covers the submission process, journal decisions, and possible reasons for rejection. It includes a short hands-on activity.
